Nevado Chicon 5,530mts 2D/1N or Pumahuanca 5,350mts

Chicon is the Apu of the city of Urubamba in the Sacred Valley. Its great vertical relief over the valley makes it an impressive peak although technically easy. There are no horses so you will need to carry your gear (20-25 kilos), which makes it a good workout over two days. Another option is Pumahuanca, a peak to the west of Chicon that can be done for the same cost and a similar itinerary. There is more technical climbing with some rope lengths of steeper hard snow and ice.

The itinerary:

Day 1 Cusco – Huaran – Cancha Cancha (4,000m) – Base Camp (4,800m)
We go by car to the City of Calca in the Sacred Valley, about 1 hour. From there we will go to the town of Huaran and begin our trek to Base Camp. The trek to Cancha Cancha is 3-4 hours, from the village we will port up to a high camp at the base of Chicon another 1.5 hours.
Day 2 BC – Summit (5,530m) - Cancha Cancha – Huaran – Cusco
We awake at 2am and leave the tent by 3am after some breakfast. The climb takes 3-5 hours to the summit, where we will stay for up to an hour depending on the weather. To get back to Huaran we will trek out about 6 hours and then by car back to Cusco another 2 hours. We arrive in the evening around 7pm.
