Cerro Soray

The itinerary:

Day 1: Cusco – Soray Pampa (3,888m) – Base Camp (4,924m)
We leave Cusco in the morning in an express van and arrive to Mollepata after about 2 hours. Here we will stop, eat breakfast and buy any last minute necessities. Then we will continue on for another hour or so to Soray Pampa at the base of the high mountains. From here we will hike up to Base Camp for 3-5 hours.
Day 2: Base Camp - Summit Cerro Soray(5,446m=17,863ft) – Soray Pampa
We will awake at 2am and leave the tent by 3am. The climb takes from 3-5 hours to the summit where we will stay for up to an hour depending on the weather. We will then go back to Base Camp and eat breakfast. The walk back down to Soray Pampa will take a few hours and we will arrive in the afternoon.
Day 3: Soray Pampa – Abra Salkantay (4,650m/15,252ft) – Challway (3,850m/12,628ft)
After breakfast we will trek to the pass of Abra Salkantay located at an elevation of 4,650m = 15,252ft. From here we can appreciate the spectacular views that the Cordillera Vilcabamba has to offer. We will then descend the other side of the pass to Huayracmachay, where we will have lunch. In the afternoon we start descending into the high amazon jungle where we can observe the environment change and a large quantity of plants and animals of this zone. In the evening we will arrive to Challhuay where we will stay for the night in cabins.
Day 4: Challway – Collpapampa – La Playa (2,046m/6,710ft) – Santa Teresa (1,500m/4,920ft)
In the morning we will trek 5 hours to the town of Playa. Along the way we can observe the variety of flora and fauna as the climate becomes more tropical. In Playa we will have lunch and then go by taxi to Santa Teresa. Here we will stay in a hostal in the town. In the evening we may visit the termal baths of Cocalmayo before dinner.
Day 5: Santa Teresa – Hydroelectric - Aguas Calientes
After our breakfast we will take a local transport to Hydroeléctrica. From here we will walk for about two hours along the train tracks and arrive to Aguas Calientes. We may decide to take the train instead which would be an extra $18. We will check in to a hotel and relax before our day at the Ruins. At a convenient time we will meet together with our guide to have dinner and discuss the next day on Machu Picchu.
Day 6: Machu Picchu – Return to Cusco
We awake at the hour of your choosing and go by bus to Machu Picchu. In the afternoon or night we will go by train to Ollantaytambo and then by collective transport to Cusco.

You will need:

  • clothing for cold and rain
  • waterproof hiking boots
  • headlamp
  • backpack
  • sunglasses
  • sunscreen

Although no mountaineering experience is required, you should be in good physical condition and acclimatized (3 days in Cusco). You must have clothing for rain, cold and hot climates. A good pair of hiking boots (preferably waterproof) is required and will be fit with our adjustable crampons.
